A Brief History of the Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet Suburban has been around since before the Second World War. In fact, the Suburban was first available for purchase way back in 1935. This first version was unique because it used all-steel construction for the body during an era when most manufacturers built cars out of wood. The Suburban accommodated up to eight people in its three rows. The first model had just two doors, however.

Six years later, the Suburban hit its second generation. During the war years, the military used the Suburban as a transport vehicle. It had a 6-cylinder engine and sat eight people. Chevrolet didn’t produce the Suburban every year during the second generation, only in 1941, 1942, and 1946.

The third generation began after the end of WWII in 1947. The Chevrolet Suburban during this era came with a split front bench and four-speed automatic transmission. But it was the fourth generation in 1955 when bigger changes started to come. During this time, the hood was flatter, and there were redesigns of the front fender and grille. A V8 engine arrived, giving the Suburban more power.

If you were to find one of these used SUV models from generations five and six from the 1960s, you would notice many style changes from its predecessors. The wheelbase increased by a foot, and there was also now rear-wheel drive available. By now, V8 and 6-cylinder engines were available during this time. By 1971, drivers had front disc brakes in the Suburban for safety. For comfort, air conditioning first arrived in the Suburban in 1972.

The seventh generation had a long run, going from 1973 to 1991. Chevrolet added many new trims during this era and offered a host of different interior configurations. These included either bucket or bench front seats as well as some trims with nine-passenger seating. In 1982, the Suburban got its most powerful engine yet, a 7.4-liter V8. By the late 1980s, a V8 engine was the standard in Suburban models.

More changes came in the 1990s with the eighth generation, including improved fuel economy, multiple transmission options, and better steering. Revised airbags also arrived in the mid-1990s. When the 21st century began, so did generation nine, which brought design and style changes as well as enhancements to the interior and wheels. Four different V8 engines were available, including a 335-horsepower version.

As the Chevrolet Suburban moved to generations 10 and 11 in the 2000s and 2010s, technology improved, as did safety features. Remote start, parking assist, rearview camera, and power-adjustable pedals became standard. A 403-horsepower V8 engine was now in some models. Entertainment became optional in some trims and standard in others with SiriusXM and HD Radio. More interior styling and exterior colors were now available. Driver-assisted safety features were now standard.

The Suburban is now in its 12th generation, and it continues to evolve to meet changing customers’ needs. Chevrolet will roll out new upgrades and enhancements to level up the driving and riding experience of Suburban owners.
