Today’s Malibu draws from a classic history of stylish models, all loaded with quality features. The Chevrolet Malibu has a long history, starting back in 1964. Initially, it debuted as a family sedan that was smaller than it is today. By the end of the second generation, the Malibu was available as a sedan, coupe, convertible, or wagon. Chevrolet changed their design focus to aerodynamics for the third generation in 1973, while the fourth generation in 1978 enhanced fuel economy. The Malibu was discontinued in 1983 at the end of its fourth generation.
The grand return of the Chevrolet Malibu was in 1997 as a brand-new vehicle. It hit the scene complete with front-wheel drive and gave drivers the option of a four- or six-cylinder engine. By 2000, the V6 engine was producing 170 horsepower while the following year, the 4-cylinder was dropped. For 2004, the Malibu saw a redesign and a new Epsilon platform with the choice of a sedan or hatchback/wagon known as the Malibu Maxx that used a 201-horsepower V6 engine. The 2008 Malibu once again grew in size and by that time, only the sedan was available.
